End of Internship!?

My internship is officially over! Yay...We had lunch together at Earle Swensen's. Throughout these 3 months, I have really learned a lot of new things. It's truly an enjoyable experience although there are days where I just sit in the lab and not doing anything. But...that's not the end, I will still go back during the semester to continue on my project. Hopefully I can complete the project as soon as possible:)

Farewell lunch at Swensen's with Reproductive Genomics Group

With A/Prof Laszlo Orban, our supervisor at the lab
Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory
We also had our project presentation on Thursday. Everything went smoothly..my prof even helped me to answer some questions, maybe because I just finished Year 1 and have a lot more to learn? Anyway, new semester is starting and we've got bidding to do. As always, I'm no luck in bidding. I did not manage to secure the modules that I wanted to take this semester. I think I will have to look out for back-up plans now. :(

Last weekend was an enjoyable day too. Visited Haw Par Villa with Joyce. I just learned that 'Haw' actually refers to the tiger and 'Par' refers to the leopard and Haw and Par are the names of the brothers who popularised Tiger Balm:)

Sumo wrestler with Tiger Balm! Haha..i think too small:P

This is the car the family owns. Looks so cute!!!
Tiger! I haven't seen the bottle of thing he holding before.
'Haw' the tiger! It's located at most of the entrances
'Par' the leopard. It's one pair:P
Many many more photos that we took. No time to upload all:P hehe..they are in facebook:) After almost 4 hours visit, we went to VivoCity to have our dinner at Terra Cafe:P Just opposite Swensen's.

Think before you ACT

So many things had happened recently to the extent that I'm not sure whether what I'm going through is worth it. I could have just gone home during this holidays, not doing my internship, not becoming a resident assistant and not having to help some people to be their messenger.

I don't really mind helping people as long as it is within my means but can't they be more polite when asking for help. It's you that want my help yet you are asking me as though I'm the one that wants your help. I don't like being 'shouted' (I can't think of a suitable word, maybe it's just the tone that you are using) at especially you are asking for help. I have no obligation to do what you asked me to. It's not even my job to do it.

Someone came back to bug me again asking for some ridiculous 'help', but he will never be able to do that again. Thank you for helping me to get rid of him. I'm guilty for not telling when it first occurred. I was thinking that it would not have such a great impact. But now I realise how serious the problem can be after putting some thought into it. I'm really really sorry about it. I might need some time to get over with it.

I'm also missing home. I haven't gone back for more than half a year, the last time being Chinese New Year which I was back for just 2-3 days and about 2 weeks in December. And I foresee myself not being able to go back for holidays so soon. Being a resident assistant means that we are required to be in campus on certain days and remain contactable and we are only entitled to 10 days of leave per semester. I will need to use about 7 days for my camp in December and will that mean that I will only have 3 days left to go home??? Mummy said it's okay since she can come and visit me whenever she thinks it's convenient. But I think the feeling will not quite be the same? Dunno :S Maybe I will feel much better when the term starts. I'm just too free these few days.

I'm also starting to get bored with my work. It's been less than 3 months and I'm already bored of it. I wonder how am I going to survive in the future. I guess what my friend said is true. Why do we need to work so hard when at the end of the day, we will not have anything? What's the purpose of life then? I have yet to find out :S I'm looking forward to some 'real' holiday. I'm tired of having to wake up so early in the morning, going to the lab and not having anything to do. If this is really what a researcher does, I really have to reconsider.

And I totally forgotten about our welcome fest event yesterday. Really sorry to the committee. I will do better next time. As for the meeting, I really didn't mean to forget about it. It totally slipped my mind.

I know in the past few weeks I've hurt someone really badly and not knowing how to make up for it. Even need the person to tell me what to do. Really disappointed in myself.

In the Lab

I'm trying to finish 2 days work in one day and now I ended up having to work over time :S Haha..but nevermind la..I look forward to a slack day tomorrow considering that I won't have much to do (hopefully). I'm currently doing 2 experiments at the same time. There are very similar to the extent that I got them mixed up sometimes.

I'm sorry for all the trouble and misunderstanding. Hope to get over them soon.

Lab Dinner at Fusionopolis

Our whole lab went for dinner together at Fusionopolis as a farewell for the Honours Students. It's the first time that we are all having a meal together..hehe..we don't usually eat lunch with our prof.

I ordered a cheese baked rice with creamy mango as the sauce and sausage, salmon and chicken as the fillings. Oh, we had free creamy corn soup too..the person brought it to us and told us it's on the house. Haha..so nice. We also have Ice Lemon Tea and Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream as dessert for taking the Student's Meal. So it's quite worth it considering that we were super full that we are lazy to walk after eating. Haha..my mentor's recommendation not bad :)

After eating, we decided to take group photos. Took one at the front of the escalator. They have quite a nice roof-like structure. And we also took another one as we are coming down from the escalator. I think that one was quite cool. Everyone was lining up to go down the escalator. The effect nice.

It was really a fun day-out together. And we saw an injured pigeon on the way back. Tried to help it but it was quite terrified. In the end, it flew across the road.

Hmm...but I did something quite silly and I regret doing. Luckily I'm forgiven (I think) :)

Trip to St. John's Island

We had our 'lab excursion' to St. John's Island. I was quite excited about it coz I haven't been there before but our professor told us that there's not food there so we need to pack our own lunch :S

We met at our supervisor's condo at 7.15am before taking a cab to Marina South Pier to board the boat. The journey was slightly less than an hour on the boat. We arrived at St. John's Island at approximately 9am, exchanged for our pass and starts working :P

Some of the fishes are really huge weighing more than 7kg. I was scared by one of the fish while we are trying to get samples from it suddenly it's awake and jump! Arr...so scary lor..lucky I manage to run fast enough and my prof took care of it after that. We took the samples we needed and they cleaned the fish to bring them home for dinner. They said it taste good.

Breaking Point

Be reasonable. There's a limit to how much humans can tolerate.

We only start to appreciate things when we no longer have them. It's too late to regret.

Everyone is different in their own way. Do not expect people to know what you are thinking.

Trust and be truth to one another. There shouldn't be any motives in our actions.

We have our limitations and weaknesses. Be ready to accept them.

A week full of UPs and DOWNs

"Friendship is not about finding similarities, it is about respecting differences. You are not my friend coz you are like me, but because i accept you and respect you the way you are."

I realise that the Singapore Education System do place a great emphasis on exams and I'm feeling it right now. Very disappointed. Our semester 2 results were out, many were glad they did better this semester but some are still very disappointed with their results for falling below expectations. I'm not sure what is expected of me this time around. But I have decided not to exercise the S/U option and see if it's good enough. Hopefully I won't regret my decision.

A little update from what I have been doing. My internship experiment shows promising results so far. Hope the sequencing results will not mess everything up and I have to repeat the whole experiment again. I really enjoyed working with my mentor. She's very kind and helpful. Although she's busy with her own experiment, she will definitely take time to make sure I understand and can cope with what I'm doing.

I went to play at the West Coast Park playground on Thursday. So fun. I think I didn't enjoy enough as a kid. Haha.. must make up for it now:P

Friday was really disappointing and sad day. I didn't expect myself to be so upset. But thanks for the company.

Anyway, Saturday's "swimming lesson" was fun. Yippee...I'm 'learning' how to swim. :P

We will also be preparing for the PGPR Welcome Festival the coming month. Will be having our general meeting soon but we are already starting to do some of the work now, like designing the guidebook. I'm looking forward to working with the RAs in the coming semester. I guess it will be very fun and exciting.

I went for the Matriculation Fair PB Briefing. It's really troublesome to be representing two clubs at the same time, especially when they fall under different groups. I guess it will be better if they are aware of what each other are doing rather than what they are doing alone. I wasted a lot of time queuing outside the LT because they direct me to the wrong queue. I even went to confirm with them 2 times that I'm in the correct queue. It started almost an hour late. Haha..rather inefficient I would say. They have also increase the price of the booths without getting consent from the PBs and only after everyone made the payment. I think it's not right for them to do so; they should have at least made the announcement once they have decided to increase the price. The reason they gave was because there's increase in cost of wiring. I was wondering if the wiring company can just increase the price after they have confirmed the price. That's not all, we were told to bring two extension cords one which must have at least 4 sockets and 5m long for one but they are only allocating us with 2 sockets each. They couldn't really justify the reason why we need to bring 2, only saying that in case we don't have enough :S So not convincing I would say.

Okie I think I'm being super critical to them. Haha..Just don't like the way they work. But whatever it is, they have my support coz this is not a small event to handle. There bound to be people who are unhappy about the arrangements. And I guess they have their share of problems to handle. So will try my best to give them my full cooperation although it may seem contradictory.

Next week, I will be shifting to another room again. Haih..so troublesome and I think it's going to be super tiring. Can't imagine my small small room and store so many things inside. Hehe..need to dispose and bring home some of my things. I'm like always bringing things here and nothing back home.

We will also be trying to organise the Singapore National Othello Championship in NUS this holidays. Hopefully the proposal will be approved fast:P Then can start working on it. Don't want everything to clash.

Treasure every moment as a student

It's not really fun to be working. I think I like being a student more. It's so much more fun and relaxing. I'm already one week into internship! Yippee! My mentor will teach me some new stuff tomorrow. I'm going to learn how to cut the electrophoresis gel and extract the DNA from it. I will also do cloning and sequencing. So excited...but it's quite tiring to go to work also. So little time left to sleep:(

Went for a meeting on standing committee updates with Yee Han, Feng Fu and E Yin (I think). Haha..cant remember her name. But it was just a short meeting. There's another one on 5th of June. So I foresee myself being very busy this holiday.

RA Training Part 2

I learned how to perform CPR and use the AED kit. Haha..so it's supposed to be quite safe being with me:P BUT I don't know how much I can remember from the course and since I tried it on a CPR Manikins I can't guarantee it to work on humans too. Haha..since they can't feel the pain. Blek...

One-Man CPR Guide
Early recognition and access.

  • Check for chemical spill, exposed electrical wire, fallingitems, fire, leaked fuel and gas (basically check for danger :))
  • Tap on the shoulder gently, shake te person and call out loudly "Hello! Hello! Are you OK?
  • If no response : "You! Call 995 for ambulance. Go and get the AED here.
Early CPR
  • Lay the patient lying flat facing up on firm, flat surface
  • Perform "Head Tilt - Chin Lift". Check airway & remove any obvious foreign object.
  • Maintain "Head Tilt - Chin Lift"
  • 'Look, Listen, Feel' for signs of breathing, ie. chest rise, sound of breath & air flow.
  • Give 2 breaths & watch chest rise concurrently
  • Check for pulse with index and middle fingers pressing at the groove at the side of neck
  • Observe for signs of circulation - coughing, consciousness, movement & breathing
  • If no pulse: Maintain head tilt, locate hand position next to the sterna notch, place heel of other hand on top of the hand on the sternum
  • Perform CPR: Interlace fingers of both hands & lift fingers off chest wall
  • Straighten both elbows and lock them in position
  • Position your shoulder directly over the patient's chest
  • Use body weight to compress patients's chest by about 4-5cm
  • Count loudly as you compress
  • Perform at least 3 cycles of CPR
Reassessment
  • Check pulse / sign of circulation for 10 seconds
  • If negative, continue CPR and wait for arrival of AED and ambulance
  • If patient is recovering, place patient into recovery position

RA Training Part 1

One week of internship is over and I'm moving on to the second week. I finally got started with my project. Quite excited about it although its a lot of repetitive work. I will have to troubleshoot many many times before getting the appropriate settings and combinations.

And we are also moving out from NUSSU Secretariat so last Thursday, we were there to pack up our things and clear the room. Found quite a lot of antiques in the room. Haha..I'm also supposed to move out from my room today but the management didn't record which room I'm supposed to move to and so the security guard who are there for the 24 hours check out don't know which is my allocated room. So I can't move yet!!! Argh, so frustrating...this is the only weekend left to shift so that means I will have to move them during the weekdays after work..the thought of it is tiring enough :S

We had our RA Training yesterday where I get to meet a lot of new friends. We had lots of fun playing the games and getting to know one another. The senior RAs were there to share their experience too. And I guess after our training, we are more geared up for the coming semester :P We also decided to have BBQ for the outgoing RAs some time in June and we had our first R3 meeting last night to plan for the upcoming activites. Today, our professors will be treating us to a restaurant to celebrate the end of another semester. Haha..I'm there to eat since I wasn't part of the team last semester :)

Internship Day 1&2

It's already my second day of internship at TLL. I haven't been doing much these two days.
Day 1
We met Yang Hong at about 9.30am to settle the administrative stuff and she brought us to our lab to meet with A/Prof Laszlo, our supervisor. My mentor's Hsiao Yuen. She's really nice and friendly. She brought us down to the store to collect some stationeries and also our lab coat. Then she showed us around the lab and brief us a bit on the safety rules and the position of equipments. After that, it's just sitting down at my table reading journals and thesis. But Hsiao Yuen asked me if I'm interested to see her doing transformation so I went to the lab with her:P I got to learn a bit about the equipment to use and some techniques to ensure measures are taken to minimised errors.

Day 2
It's super boring. My mentor went to Qian Hu to collect some samples so she was not in the whole morning. Therefore, there's nothing for me to do. She was quite busy after coming back so no time to really teach me. We went for a 2 hours lunch and seminar at the auditorium. I was super sleepy. Nearly fall asleep in the auditorium but because we were sitting at the first row right in front of the speaker, have to pretend I'm paying full attention and fight my sleepiness. So torturing to sit in for one hour and feeling sleepy plus the auditorium's like quite nice to sleep.

Look forward for tomorrow. I'll have to wait for Qifeng to pass me his thesis to read:P I hope there's something for me to do. Don't like sitting in the lab and staring the the flap catching flies:S

Post-Exam Activities

11.30am. Our exams are finally over! Yippee! We decided to head to somewhere further - Tampines! Visited the new Tampines One. Haha..it's definitely not comparable to shopping centres in KL.

We had lunch at Swensens'. There's a lunch 1-for-1 promotion. So the three of us went it and start ordering which one to be the free one. There's also the student promotion but it only starts at 2.30pm. So we took 2 sets of the 1-for-1 promotion. Making it a total of 4 dishes. Yummy!

We ordered salmon and tuna sandwich, caesar chicken salad, chicken baked rice and chicken mushroom pizza. Hmm, we didn't realised that we ordered mostly chicken. And the salad wasn't one of our choices either. But because we pay the same price for 4 dishes and for 3 dishes, we just add another salad:P

Sandwich..quite a challenging task to cut it up..haha..but eelin, u are expert in it:P

And we ate them all up. Too full that we have our dinner quite late.
The super giant salad bowl that I totally underestimated its size.
See how big the fork is:P
Attempting to eat with the giant utensils:P.

Standing in the Eyes of the World

Pahit getir hidup... dan pengorbanan
Terpaksa dihadapi, demi kejayaan
Terdidik sejak mula, tabah berusaha
Tanpa cuba melangkah, tak kemana
Di mana kau berada
Pencapaian tak tiba dengan mudah

Kini "Standing In The Eyes Of The World"
Hanyalah selangkah dari nyata
Keazaman membara dijiwa
Menanti saat bebas merdeka
Tiba masa kau melangkah gagah
Bersemangat ke arah matlamat sedaya upaya
Engkau terunggul
Wajar "Standing In The Eyes Of The World"

Harapan yang pernah terkulai layu
Kembali segar mekar bawah bayanganmu
Setiap manusia ingin berjaya
Namun tak semua miliki tuah
Engkau menghampirinya
Kesempatan telah pun tiba...

Looking back all the years, all the sacrifice
If you want to be the best you've got to pay the price
You learn it from the very start just how hard you must try
'Coz if you don't spread your wings then you can't fly
Look at where you are today
Did you ever think that you would come all this way ?

(And) now you're
"Standing In The Eyes Of The World"
Only moments away from what can be
There's a passion in the hearts of a few
ever waiting inside to be set free
When the time comes and your spirit
takes flight and you reach into
your soul and live it with all of your might
And there's no surprise that you're
(And everyone tries when you're)
"Standing In The Eyes Of The World"

Many have hopes and dreams that will not come true
And all of them left behind now they will live in you
Everyone feels the same once a day in the sun
But sometimes there is only room for one
Never ever been so near now the chance is finally here

How do you think?!

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't!
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,
It's almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of mind!
If you think you're outclassed, you are;
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself
Before you'll ever win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the person who thinks he can!
Yay! Its study break but the weather is not making it conducive to study. My room is like a mini sauna. You can really sweat it all out by just sitting at the table. I wish my fan is much nearer to the table and not the bed:S so warm so warm!

I haven't really finished revising for all my subjects. Having so many open book exams is totally not good. So many things to read and understand because you won't really have much time to flip the pages and I doubt you can really find the answers but there's too much to read - because it's an open book exam, you are expected to be able to find the answers (although the tutor might not have teach).

So far, I manage to complete half of my biz law and half of accounting. Ha-ha..I always do things halfway, it's just too boring studying the same subject over and over again - need some change. Anyway, I hope I will complete revising for accounting today. Then can start of microeconomics real soon. This is the subject that I have least confidence in.

I was supposed to go down to the study room or library today but I woke up late and the weather isn't that bad today. I think it rained this morning. So when I woke up at 7am, it's very cooling, very nice to sleep and I crawl back into my bed. He-he..so yeap..I'm back in my room studying, with my bed tempting me to sleep once in awhile..well, I can't help it, the fan is there..Ha-ha..okay I'm just giving myself excuses.

I was in the library yesterday and it was super packed. I haven't really seen so many people in the library and study room before. Everyone's studying hard. I guess I have to also. :P

Finally..

Yippee..no more assignments, no more CA, no more tutorials to do..wait..maybe not..one more tutorial to go..statistics:S but i will finish it later..hehe

Tuesday was the day to submit the report for our accounting module. I volunteered to print and submit it since I will have no lessons except for a one hour tutorial. I thought I knew where is the place to submit it but it was totally unexpected. I thought there will be a box place in front of the office for us to put it inside. That's what Ms Belinda told us. But the place was actually an office which we have to enter - office similar to that of a professor room - and pass it to the person. I was wandering around looking for a box which is as big as a room..haih..silly me..met Zi Jian my tutorial classmate there. He went to submit their group's report too. We took quite some time before deciding to knock and enter the room because there were no sign indicating that's the submission venue.

After lunch, I went for tutorial and back to PGP. I was supposed to go for an interview too but never mind, there's some misunderstanding and it's postponed. So I will go over later. Was a bit disappointed but then as least someone is happy.

Was busy rushing to prepare my presentation slides and report at night. Manage to finish the report during IGC meeting and came back to do the slides. Sleepy and tiring.

And today's the presentation day. And I was LATE! Arr..I overslept. Woke up at 8.50 am and I got a shock. I so so so late:S Luckily I wasn't one of the presenter today. But I think we didn't handle the Q&A very well. Quite disappointing. And worse, we got below average again for our assignment. So in conclusion, I scored below average for my midterm, below average for the first assignment and below average for the second assignment. There's a lot of catching up I need to do before the finals. I guess our way of working with the assignment wasn't good enough. I don't know. I do not blame my groupmates for that. I have the responsibility to check the answers for them too.

Haih..today's just an unlucky day. I need more luck to get through my interview. Lots of luck!!!

No more CAs

I had my final CA for the semester today. Don't think it was very well done. But at least now just have to focus on my 5 final papers and after that will be a long holiday. We finalized our accounting assignment today and it’s ready for printing and submission tomorrow. Yippee. Next up will be preparing for managerial economics presentation on Wednesday.

Last week was the last lecture for financial accounting and we were treated to light refreshments after the lecture. So this week I will only have statistics tutorial to attend on Tuesday. Yippee! But I will still need to go and print our report and submit it at Biz 1 (02-04). I hope I won’t get lost looking for the place. =P

I’m so looking forward to my first long break since university started but the uncertainty of what I will be doing (besides playing) makes me hope that it will take some time before it comes. Hehe...that mean I will have more time before the finals.

I will have 3 open book exams this semester. So a lot of reading need to be done considering that I have yet to open most of the books and read through them seriously besides using to complete my tutorial. So this coming week, I will have to be super hardworking and make sure I know where to find all the answers.

Jemma, Prisca and Jane came over last Friday to do our managerial economics report and I would say its ¾ done now. Just need a bit more fine-tuning and examples to be added and it will be ready for submission. We are more concern of the presentation now.

I also watched Slumdog Millionaire last Friday, Watched it on DVD with Alex. It was quite a nice movie. The young Jamal is so cute. Hehe..But I think it was quite sad that he didn’t know that his brother died or was he informed:P I didn’t fall asleep this time. I remember watching until the credits come out and he was happily dancing there. A bit don’t make sense hor..And they also didn’t say why his brother didn’t want to save Latika the first time. Hehe…I guess if he did then there will be nothing else to show? And he wouldn’t be on the television show and it will just be a happy ending in less than an hour and it will not be as good as it is:P

Trip to the ZOO

Yesterday was the last day for our Biodiversity practicals and we went to the Zoo. It was fun. Gerard drove us (Bryan and I) to the zoo. Met my group and TA, Jun Hao at the entrance and we proceed into the zoo. Yippee!! Super excited. The first time I go to the Zoo in Singapore. We manage to visit quite a number of animals and catch a bit of the Elephant show! The elephants are all super trained. Hehe..so cute seeing one of them trying to wake the other one up by splashing water on her. Haa..super naughty. Manage to see a lot of monkeys. The New World Monkeys and the Old World Monkeys. I didn't know there are different ones before this. Haha..I just know them as MONKEYS!

Some of the animals in the zoo are just super good in posing. They will just try to get your attention to snap their photos. Oh oh, we also went to Australia and see Kangaroos! Haha..first time seeing real life Kangaroos hopping! So cute! And just before out CA, we visited the Polar Bear! Arr so cute. But it just went into the air-con den so fast that we didn't really get to see it.

Had dinner with Eelin and Munlok at the Food Centre opposite Harbour Front Centre. After our dinner, we went to VivoCity to visit the platypus at National Geographic. Haha..Eelin was right, the tail super nice to squeeze.
The went over to Giant to do some shopping. Hehe..I just love to shop for food. Yummy!

The just nice to squeeze tail

The poor victim:P
