Positive Attracts explores the belief that the optimism of our mental state of mind (4th Dimension) can effect a positive outcome of our physical state (3rd Dimension). The installation consists of the Artist's 9 favourite optimistic visionaries (Heroes) who have used their mental state to effect positive outcomes in their physical world. Inspired by songs such as "Rainbow Connection" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow", these Heroes incubate dreams and will "deposit positivity" to the public as they draw near to the Heroes. Famous quotes written at base of each Heroes will enable the public to guess who they are.

The installation explores the meaning of touch in life and art. The sentence, "Touch. Do Not Please The Work of Art" is applied on the long wall using phosphorescent paint. In the day, only the title of the work as a protrusion on the wall is visible and touchable. At night, stroboscope spotlights highlight the passage for an instant every 30 seconds. The words light up and passers-by, when touching, looking or just passing the artwork, will cast their silhouettes and shadows onto the installation, leaving behind an instant personal graffiti.

Animal Tree is a lamp pole that can be installed in any public space. The shed of the lamp is composed of 512 pieces of orange happy bears. The operation is simple; it offers shade during daytime and emits light at night. The Animal Tree promotes the idea that the future can rely on simplicity and emotions, rather than complex electrical circuits which require a lot of maintenance. Simply pay more attention to joyfulness as well as to aesthetics and technology.

My Public Garden is a luxurious glowing garden, a playful and festive park full of fanciful plants and enchanted flowers. A total of 29 giant plant-like light sculptures of 6 different varieties will make up the bouquets adorning the site.Marina Bay will be transformed into an imaginary landscape from an artist's sketchbook, where giant wild plants bloom in the darkness, glowing softly with an elegant luminosity. It is an enchanted forest, beckoning the public to enjoy an intimate stroll among the immense, alluring bouquets. The light sculptures are large artworks, the smallest being 3.5m tall & the largest at 11m, visible from far away, creating a beautiful landscape even from a distance, offering an interplay of perspectives.

Imagine the jellyfish deciding to leave our polluted oceans and having a refreshing dip in the clean waters of Marina Bay before escaping into the universe as 'reverse UFOs', thereby for one last time trying to entertain and challenge all of us to be more aware of the consequences of our extravagance. The artists created these interactive and imaginative light objects providing an opportunity for visitors to 'grab' the jellyfish's tentacles and keep them on Earth.

The crouching digital tigers combine ancient lantern making methods with cutting edge digital design and fabrication technology, bringing east and west together through tradition and innovation. The tigers are inspired by "zhezhi", a Chinese term for paper folding, more popularly known by its Japanese name "origami". In producing this artwork, traditional Chinese lantern makers in Sichuan province, where lantern making has been taking place for over 800 years, and local artisans were consulted. The Digital Origami Tigers are currently travelling the world as part of the World Wildlife Fund's Year of the Tiger campaign.

Poetry for a Diver

Breath-hold divers such as the Ama
Exhibit keen autonomic control
With bradycardia and vasoconstriction
Oxygen conservation is the goal
To dive to great depths comes an increase in pressure
And scuba gear is required.
Care must be taken during ascent and descent

Otherwise barotrauma will conspire.
Upon descont nitrogen dissolves in the tissues
And if fast ascent you do not contend,
Nitrogen bubbles will form in the joints
And produce a condition called the bends.
So while leisurely scuba diving in an ocean of pleasure
Beware of 'raptures of the deep',
You may feel euphoric but its nitrogen narcosis
And integrity of the brain you want to keep.

Handling Criticisms

How do you handle criticisms when they are displayed before you with different intensities, ranging from mild assertions to stinging words thrown straight in your face?

Stop Being Defensive and Start Examining Yourself
In all cases, criticism usually arises out of something that you did or didn’t do. The most difficult task is to separate the facts from the emotions. The next step is to objectively look at the results and ask how you played a part of it. For example, if you were criticised for making bad decisions that caused poor results, examine how you made it happened. This is because if you were to instantly be defensive, self evaluation will not occur at all.

A cognitive psychological tool called Johari window also states that everyone has a blind spot. This represents information that a person is not aware about themselves but others are aware of it. Therefore, it is imperative to listen what the criticism is and find out whether there is any truth in that statement.

Change Yourself
Change does not usually happen at a cognitive level but usually happens at an emotional level. For example, even if you are overweight and know that you have to lose weight, you might not be doing anything significant about it. This is the cognitive level. However, when things happen at an emotional level, the results might be longer lasting.

So, ask yourself the tough question what do you need to change? By not making a decision is also making a decision not to do anything. Change only comes in when you demonstrate the resolve and absolute desire to make it happen (and of course, take MASSIVE ACTION on it).

It is also good to thing about the good outcomes from the positive change in your life. Know that everything comes with a cost, even with change. So, discipline and intense resolution is required to make the change.

Understand that Criticism is inevitable
Criticism; whether it is given with true intentions or destructive in nature, are always inevitable.
Here are some questions to determine if criticism is helpful:
  • Who said it? Sometimes harsh words from a wise man are better than the loving kisses of fools.
  • What was the spirit behind it? Is it to help or tear me down?\
  • What is the truth? I need to determine if what was true and how I should address it.
Let go and move on
What happens when you feel that after much self examination, there is really nothing wrong with yourself? There are people who will constantly grew angry and frustrated because of what other people said to them. They are not able to let go and move on in their lives.

Secure people can see that they are fallible and know what their weaknesses are. The good thing is that they make a conscious decision not to get bonded by the negativity and move ahead fresh. If you keep harping about the past, you will never be able to take on the new possibilities in your life.

John Maxwell in an article shares that “while we are growing up, a lot of us spend a good deal of time worrying about what the world thinks of us. By the time we reach 60, we realize the world wasn’t paying much attention.”

Conclusion:
Some of the best people that entered into your life were your critics, not friends. Treat criticisms with a certain respect, learn from it and then move on in your life

A little LOVE

Dedicated to my dear BC...

Greatness as you
Smallest as me
You show me what is deep as sea

A little love, little kiss
A litlle hug, little gift
All of little something. these are our memories

You make me cry,
Make me smile,
Make me feel that love is true...
You always stand by my side,
I don't want to say goodbye.

You make me cry,
Make me smile,
Make me feel the joy of love.
Oh! Kissing you...
Thank you for all the love you always give to me,
Oh! I love you...

(* Repeat from the beginning * 01 time)

Yes I do, I always do...

Make me cry,
Make me smile
Make me feel that love is true
You always stand by my side
I don't want to say goodbye.

You make me cry,
Make me smile,
Make me feel the joy of love

Ghost of You and Me

What am I supposed to do
With all these blues
Haunting me, everywhere, no matter what I do
Watching the candle flicker out in the evening glow
I cant let go
When will this night be over

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name for what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

Seen a lot of broken hearts go sailing by
Phantom ships, lost at sea
And one of them is mine
Raising my glass, I sing a toast to the midnight sky
I wonder why
The stars don't seem to guide me

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name for what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

The ghost of you and me
When will it set me free
I hear the voices call
Following footsteps down the hall
Trying to save what's left of my heart and soul

Watching the candle flicker out in the evening glow
I can't let go
When will the night be over

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name for what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name for what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

Company Photo

We took a company photo today! I really enjoyed my work at Acumen. Dr Ong had been really nice and teaching us lots of new things.

I've learned more about the financial aspects as well as project management. I also had the opportunity to meet many professors to discuss about possible project collaboration. I've just met the Associate Director of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company today. I manage to learn something new from him too.

Our company website was officially launched last week and I had been working on the booklet specially made for a trip to Poland. We will need to put on the final touch and it's ready for printing tomorrow.

I'm also in-charged of making arrangement for our weekly T.E.A.M. There's really lots of learning opportunity in a start-up company. Since it's a small company, we get to try a bit of everything.

I'll also be starting on research of my projects which I had been doing literature research on. Will be looking forward to it!

Oh, there's one new member to my Pooh family. Will post the photo next time since I can't get it out from the camera.

Last weekend, we had R3 farewell dinner for the 4 graduating RAs. I guess we will all miss them. I really learned a lot from them. Wish them all the best! (Photos also can't be taken out from the camera)

Reminder: Check when is their commencement :) (or if you all happened to read this, drop me a message k :P)

Oh, I just realised the reflection of the cars moving along the road from my window looks like shooting star!

Holiday!!

Exams was over more than a week ago. I have been enjoying myself since then. Internship officially starts on Monday. No more playing around. Need to wake up early every morning, even earlier than I need to go for lesson. But I guess this new job will be exciting. The company offers contract R&D services to support early-stage drug target discovery and pre-clinical drug development in the pharmaceutical industry, with focus on anti-cancer therapy.

Currently the office is on campus, so travelling isn't much of a problem for me. The canteens will also be open, so can get cheap food too (but a bit bored of it).

Nevertheless, the learning outcome from this internship includes:
  • Apply knowledge learnt in classes in industry lab
  • Experience in translational research and industry R&D processes (vs academic)
  • Appreciate startups as a mechanism of commercialization of science and technology
Other specific projects and learning outcome:
  • Understanding and implementing the concepts of a contract R&D business
  • Setting up the operations and administrative processes for a new lab and R&D company
  • Experience and exposure in interactions with diverse partners in the R&D industry.
Sounds like a lot to learn for me but that's the usual objective of internship, right? To learn as much as I can :D Looking forward to it.

Trust

Trust is the currency in all relationships, whether in office or at home. If you do not have enough of this currency, you will realise that whatever you do, you will need more time, energy and money to perform a task. However, you will realise that the reverse is true as well.

Imagine how things can be done faster if people had their trust in you?

Imagine that business deals are done simply with a handshake rather than countless pages of contract?

Imagine how you can align people to a common objective because they trust that you will deliver?

Foods that harm

HUMANS eat food to get the energy required for the activities of daily living. Many people eat more than the daily requirements. This, together with the lack of exercise, leads to the obesity epidemic that is spreading globally.
The body recognises most food items as “friendly”. However, some people have food allergies. Their body’s immune system identifies specific food items as “foreign” and produces antibodies, called immunoglobulin E (IgE), which attack the food item. The chemicals released in the process cause unpleasant side effects. The body’s response is rapid and is potentially life-threatening.
Food allergies are common in children, affecting about 5% overall, but with a higher incidence in younger children. In general, children outgrow their food allergies by the time they start formal schooling. However, only a few outgrow peanut allergies. When a sufferer reaches adulthood with a food allergy, the latter will probably be life-long.
It is not known why food allergies occur but the risk is increased if a person or his or her family members have other allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema.
Food intolerance
Food allergy is different from food intolerance. The former involves the body’s immune system but the latter does not. Food allergic reactions occur with the smallest amount of the food item. Food intolerance is usually dose related, that is, small amounts of the food item are tolerated by the body but larger amounts lead to a reaction which may mimic food allergy. Food intolerance is of slower onset than food allergy and is not life-threatening.
Allergens
Any food can cause an allergic reaction. The common allergy-provoking food in children includes cow’s milk protein, egg, soya bean, wheat, peanuts and fish. The common allergy-provoking food in adults includes nuts, mushrooms and seafood such as fish, prawn, crab, shrimp, clam and squid.
Food allergies have also been attributed to certain food additives and preservatives but this is disputed by some experts. The additives and preservatives include monosodium glutamate (MSG), sodium benzoate, sulphites and tartrazine.
Some young adults may suffer from localised oral allergies. They have an itchy throat and mouth when they consume certain fresh fruits (such as apple or cherry), vegetables (carrot or celery) and nuts.
Consequences
The individual who has a food allergy may be affected in more ways than one. Although the clinical features are generally mild, an anaphylaxis may occur which can be life-threatening. The non-consumption of certain foods without a substitute food can result in nutritional deficiency with its attendant consequences, including poor growth in a child.
A food allergy usually occurs within minutes of consuming a small amount of the food item. The clinical features include itching, particularly around the mouth; swelling of the mouth and/or throat; generalised body rashes; wheezing; nausea; diarrhoea; vomiting and occasionally anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction which may occur at any age but rarely in babies. It usually starts with the clinical features in the previous paragraph but progresses to breathing difficulties; marked swelling of the mouth and throat; rapid pulse rate; severe abdominal pain, vomiting and/or diarrhoea; weakness or dizziness due to a sudden drop in blood pressure; collapse and unconsciousness.
An anaphylaxis is life-threatening and usually occurs rapidly, although the clinical features may sometimes occur up to an hour or so after consumption of the food item.
Management
A consultation with the doctor is essential if a food allergy is suspected. The doctor will take a history which would include details about the reaction and whether there is a family history of other allergies (for instance allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema) and conduct a physical examination. A referral to a specialist may be made by the doctor.
The keeping of a detailed diary of all foods consumed, together with the clinical features of any reaction, for about a fortnight prior to consulting the doctor would be helpful in the elucidation of the causative agent. The diary should contain details of all foods, drinks and medicines, including food supplements, consumed. The clinical features of any reaction, its intensity and timing in relation to the food consumed should be recorded. The food diary would be helpful in directing allergy tests.
Skin-prick testing involves placing drops of various diluted foods on the arm and then introducing the food drops into the body by pricking the skin with needle or lancet. A positive reaction is indicated itchiness, redness and swelling at the site of the prick. This test is safe. The accuracy of the test depends on whether the reaction is negative or positive. If the result is negative, the results are about 90% accurate but if it is positive, it is about 50% accurate.
Tests done on a blood sample to detect antibodies to specific foods provide information about the likelihood of an allergy to the foods. Negative results are about 90% accurate, but positive results are about 50% accurate.
The gold standard in food-allergy testing is challenge-testing, which involves the consumption of a small amount of the suspected food item under the supervision of a specialist in a hospital. The reason for this precaution is because of the likelihood of an anaphylaxis. A diagnosis can be made if a reaction is observed. Challenge-testing is time-consuming, costly and cannot be done on those with asthma or other allergic reactions.
A positive diagnosis of food allergy can only be made by taking into consideration the history, physical examination and the results of tests. If the identification of the food item is not possible but food allergy is suspected, an elimination diet will be suggested. This involves non-consumption of certain food items and gradual reintroduction into the diet. A food diary is kept with a record of any clinical features of an allergic reaction. The test is usually done under the dietician’s supervision in order to avoid any nutritional deficiency.
Although there is no cure for food allergy, it can be managed by avoiding the causative food item. The diet consumed has to be planned to ensure that it is nutritionally balanced. In addition, advice will be provided on the checking of food labels so that specific food item can be avoided.
There are special milk formulas for babies who are allergic to milk and/or soya. The doctor may prescribe medicines depending on the severity of the food allergy and the patient’s individual circumstances. The commonly prescribed medicines are anti-histamines which counteract the histamine release in an allergic reaction. Anti-histamines are suitable for mild allergies but are unsuitable for small children and patients who have fits. They cannot be used to manage severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis.
Severe food allergies or anaphylaxis is managed with adrenaline which keeps the airways open and reverses any drastic fall in blood pressure. The adrenaline comes in the form of auto-injector pens. Treatment should be sought at the Accident and Emergency (A & E) department of a hospital after using an adrenaline auto-injector pen. It is recommended that children with food allergies should carry two doses of adrenaline as more than 10% of children who present at A & E departments with severe food allergies or anaphylaxis receive a second dose.
It is essential that children, their carers and teachers are provided with information on the usage of the medicines prescribed.
Prevention
The prevention of food allergies is possible if the causative food item is identified. However, it is easier said than done. General measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood of food allergies. Exclusive breastfeeding especially in the first four to six months of life has been reported to reduce the incidence of allergies. Patients who have a strong family history of allergies are usually advised to avoid smoking during pregnancy and to breastfeed exclusively.
Parents should be careful and introduce new food one at a time to the baby’s diet. If there are any clinical features of an allergic reaction, the doctor should be consulted. When a food allergy has been confirmed by tests, the most effective way of prevention is to avoid the food item altogether.
It is important to remember if all potentially allergy-provoking foods are avoided after the baby has stopped breastfeeding, it is more likely to cause malnutrition. A nutritionist would be helpful in providing advice on alternative food items that have similar nutritional value. Whenever there is doubt, it is advisable to consult the doctor.

Win People Over Rather Than Win Arguments

I found this fascinating quote today:

Winning an argument is tempting for most people working in a team. Who does not wish to be right? Who does not want to have the last say and feel victorious? But if your focus is on the team’s progress and not on personal whims, sometimes it is better in the first place not to get into an argument. The best way to get your message across to people is to win them over instead of winning an argument with them.deepimpactonline.com, Win People Over Rather Than Win Arguments, Mar 2010
