Pharmville

An event organised by the NUS Pharmaceutical Society where we get to learn about what pharmacists do and about our health in an enjoyable way.

There were 11 games booth set up at NUS Science Foyer, outside LT27.

The first game we tried was a computer golf game by an external company - Xepa. The goody bag is so cute. Nicer than the happy meal box..haha..

Some other games are:

1. Drug design and synthesis - Right seed, right soil

  • Research pharmacist
  • Use ball and stick model to create and modify drug compound
The drug we were told to design was an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor, Enalapril (if I didn't remember wrongly)

2. Drug formulation - Barnadol
  • Formulation / Industrial Pharmacist
  • Mix and match activity to learn about different dosage forms
We were told to match the different types of panadol - those suitable for infants, kids, adults.

3. Good Manufacturing Practices - Drug harvesting plant
  • Industrial Pharmacist
  • Practice good hygiene in manufacturing to prepare a visually uncontaminated solution.
We need to prepare a pure NaCl solution with 1 teaspoon of salt and 50ml of water.

4. Patient-centered therapy - Jumble trouble
  • Hospital and Community Pharmacist
  • Learn how different therapies applies to similar disease states through jigsaw puzzle.
I think the one we need to solve was gastric pain. Quite simple, just 8 pieces of puzzle :D

5. Dispensing and drug information - Bee-zy pharmacy
  • Outpatient Pharmacist, Drug Information Pharmacist
  • Part 1: Competition to see who counts pills the fastest and most accurately
  • Part 2: Roll a toy car and learn more about vitamins and supplements.
I don't remember playing the second part but we manage to win the first prize for pills counting..yippee - $50 Capitaland voucher!

6. Compounding, quality control, labeling - The cornpounding pharmacy
  • Compounding Pharmacist
  • Make coloured capsules and learn how to check and label
It's quite difficult to close the capsules. But we still manage to complete it.

7. Patient safety - Pharmer's market
  • Dispensing Pharmacist
  • Sort white pills according to prescription
This is where we learn about the weird acronyms that doctors use.

8. Myths unearthed - Pharmyth
  • Drug Information Pharmacist
  • Read the posters around and answer 3 simple questions
One of them was the use of Vick Vapour rub on kids.

9. Health screening - Pharmville barn
  • Patient Care Pharmacist
  • Free basic health screening
  • Height, weight, blood pressure, body fat, blood glucose testing, anti-oxidant level testing
We didn't do any of these. We just answered some questions on the drugs usage and its main components.

10. Word NO Tobacco Day - 31st May
  • Health promotion
  • Learn about harmful effects of smoking and enquire about quitting smoking and counseling by a qualified Unity pharmacist
We just went there to get a bag tag and pen :D. Didn't need to do anything at this station.

At each booth, we get to earn a stamp to redeem prizes at the end.

FYP - Confirmed

I've finally decided on my FYP prof. It was a difficult decision but I hope I made the right  decision.

Today's supposed to be the released of SPM results. I wonder how my brother did? :D

For the final 3 weeks of the semester, I've got 2 take home assignment (25%), 2 continual assessment and 1 pop-quiz. I'm beginning to feel that 24hours a day is not enough. Need to work harder!!

Anyway, TPJC 25th Anniversary Homecoming Dinner will be held on the 28th of May 2011. There's a high possibility that I'll not be able to make it as I plan to go back to Malaysia at that time. Wonder if any of my friends will be attending?

Lift Maintenance

The lifts had been taking turn to go out of service. The maintenance is scheduled to be over by this Saturday. I hope it will be done soon. It's really quite inconvenient to have only one lift functioning at a time especially when we need to go up since we can't use the stairs to get into our cluster.

FYP Second Interview

Went for my second interview today with my prospective mentor, Grace. It was not really considered an interview. Basically she told me more about what we will be doing in the lab and the people. Based on what she said, it seems to be a helpful and friendly lab to work it.

Awaiting confirmation from the prof now.

FYP-Hunting

Just a few days ago, I began to email Professors to search for a suitable lab to do my Final Year Project. I guess this is NUS's way of preparing you for job-hunt when you graduate. So far, I've emailed about 7 Profs and among them, there are 2 positive replies (indicating they have projects available), 2 negative replies (lab's full or no projects available) and no replies from the rest (how demoralizing)

Anyway, I've just met one of the prof this afternoon and things doesn't look that good considering that she's interviewing a few other students and I do not intend to continue to do PhD. She'll let me know by the end of March whether I'll be accepted or not. I think continuing to pursue Masters/PhD is seen as a very important criterion with some Profs listing that as their top criteria. Maybe I should start considering too

I'm not sure when the registration date is for FYP but this e-mailing and not getting much response is not something that I like. Maybe I'm not spending enough time to hunt for FYP or maybe I started too late? But whatever it is, I must persevere until I get a project now that I've decided to continue to do honours.

We've also applied for the MOE Teaching Internship. Hope we can get it. Then at least there's something to do this coming hols. It's only a one month internship so there are still lots of time left for a well-deserving break. I'm already starting to think about what to do for the upcoming holidays.
I hope to spend a month or so to learn driving. A skill which I think is not essential but useful to know. I don't think I'll have much time to learn once I start working next time so hope to accomplish it this coming hols. I might also start literature review of my FYP project depending on the Prof (well, that's assuming I can get a project in the first place) And lastly, maybe find a part time job or internship to earn some money and have FUN!

Alright, time to start working on my assignment that's due next week.

Proud of You

Love in your eyes
Sitting silent by my side
Going on Holding hand
Walking through the nights

Hold me up Hold me tight
Lift me up to touch the sky
Teaching me to love with heart
Helping me open my mind

I can fly
I'm proud that I can fly
To give the best of mine
Till the end of the time

Believe me I can fly
I'm proud that I can fly
To give the best of mine
The heaven in the sky

***

Stars in the sky
Wishing once upon a time
Give me love Make me smile
Till the end of life

Hold me up Hold me tight
Lift me up to touch the sky
Teaching me to love with heart
Helping me open my mind

I can fly
I'm proud that I can fly
To give the best of mine
Till the end of the time

Believe me I can fly
I'm proud that I can fly
To give the best of mine
The heaven in the sky

Can you believe that you lie down my way, no matter how that is my birth, I never loose my day.

See me fly.
I'm proud to fly up high.
Show you the best of mine.
Till the end of the time

Believe me I can fly.
I'm singing in the sky.
Show you the best of mine.
The heaven in the sky.

Nothing can stop me to spread my wings, so wide

Week 3

It's already Week 3 into Semester 2. My modules are finally settled and I'll be able to complete my second major this semester as long as there's no major disaster on my grades. Yippee!! They've allocated me, Supply Chain Management in replacement of Service Ops.

This semester is also the first time that my P account is bankrupt. I've used up all my points for Tumour Biology. 2103 points in total. I hope it's worth it. So far the lectures had been okay but I don't really like the lecturer and the LT. He'll explain simple concepts quite throughly and rush through the more complicated ones. Today will be his last lecture, hopefully the other 3 lecturers are much better. And that LT is super squeezy such that you can't move around much. If you're late, you better hope that there's corner seats available, if not, you'll just have to seat on the steps.

I'm also taking Immunology, Hormones and Health and Darwin and Evolution, a new module offered for the first time this semester. The module is rather interesting but there's lots of readings, even more than what I have for my core modules. It's supposed to be science gem but there's so much history in it that I'm beginning to think that it should be classified as an arts gem instead.

The inaugural Residence Games is finally over after months of planning. Well done to the team! I think most of them really work very hard for it.

I've just received one of the most troublesome coverage that I've ever done in VPC. The organising chairperson is so annoying. He keeps calling you almost every other day to ask about different things. Can't he just wait for e-mail replies?? It all started in December when we agreed to loan them the equipment for some shooting because we were short of manpower. He's request for the camera one day before he needs to use it and expect to get it. I'm not so free to everyday sit here and wait for your call with the camera. And I've never need to have 23 email correspondence with the organiser for one event. Arrgh..I'm just so irritated by him.

Time to take a break and play games!

Closure of DSC3202 Service Operations Mgmt C2 class on Tues 3-6pm in Semester 2 AY2010/11

From a module that has no exam to one with finals and accepting that I'll have 2 papers back to back after the changes. And after spending 6 hours in class, the class is closed and I'm forced to drop the module.

"We regret to inform you that the DSC3203 C2 class on Tuesdays 3-6pm will be closed due to low enrollment.  We have examined various issues at length but due to university and school policies, we would have to merge the 2 (ie, C1 and C2) classes. We will automatically shift C2 students into the C1 class on Tuesdays 9-12pm if possible.

For those that have timing/module clashes with the C1 class, we will drop DSC3203 from your timetable."

So disappointing! So many mistakes! Failure in Service Operations! No wonder it's so difficult to complete a double major on time.

December Holiday

This holiday was quite well spent. I really enjoyed myself.

4th December 2010 - R3 Dinner
Went to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao at Holland Village for steamboat buffer treat by our profs. Yummy! Too bad I forgotten to take any photos.

6th December 2010 - A day @ SYC

This year I'm only able to attend one day of SYC. Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself and get to know quite a few people.

8th - 10th December 2010 - Residential Leaders Camp
This is my first RLC. It was really better than expected. I've got to know the RAs better and have lots of fun together. The activities were great. I even try canoe polo and walking in the swimming pool blind folded. New experience!

12th-18th December 2010 - Back to Malaysia
Haven't gone back since CNY. Bobo went back with me this time. FUN FUN FUN!

18th - 21st December 2010 - Back to Singapore
Daddy and Mummy came back with me to Sg this time. Brought them around to a few places. Rainy weather didn't help at all.

22nd December 2010 - STEP Chapter: Singapore meeting
Meeting with John to finalise the details for the Boys' Town Orientation. Had a cook together with Su, Kelly, and MJ before the meeting. Ended the day with delicious nasi lemak from Boon Lay.

26th December 2010 - Christmas Party
Attended OOS Christmas Party. Didn't really eat much. Played some board games and Bobo said I'm the overall champion! Haha..conquered Australia and Asia in the last round.

29th December 2010 - STEP Gathering
A gathering for all SYC participants and to formally introduce the STEP Chapter: Singapore upcoming activities.

31st December 2010 - New Year's Eve
Spent time with Bobo. Didn't go anywhere for countdown. Just watch from TV. In fact, I think it's better than going there.
