Week 3
It's already Week 3 into Semester 2. My modules are finally settled and I'll be able to complete my second major this semester as long as there's no major disaster on my grades. Yippee!! They've allocated me, Supply Chain Management in replacement of Service Ops.
This semester is also the first time that my P account is bankrupt. I've used up all my points for Tumour Biology. 2103 points in total. I hope it's worth it. So far the lectures had been okay but I don't really like the lecturer and the LT. He'll explain simple concepts quite throughly and rush through the more complicated ones. Today will be his last lecture, hopefully the other 3 lecturers are much better. And that LT is super squeezy such that you can't move around much. If you're late, you better hope that there's corner seats available, if not, you'll just have to seat on the steps.
I'm also taking Immunology, Hormones and Health and Darwin and Evolution, a new module offered for the first time this semester. The module is rather interesting but there's lots of readings, even more than what I have for my core modules. It's supposed to be science gem but there's so much history in it that I'm beginning to think that it should be classified as an arts gem instead.
The inaugural Residence Games is finally over after months of planning. Well done to the team! I think most of them really work very hard for it.
I've just received one of the most troublesome coverage that I've ever done in VPC. The organising chairperson is so annoying. He keeps calling you almost every other day to ask about different things. Can't he just wait for e-mail replies?? It all started in December when we agreed to loan them the equipment for some shooting because we were short of manpower. He's request for the camera one day before he needs to use it and expect to get it. I'm not so free to everyday sit here and wait for your call with the camera. And I've never need to have 23 email correspondence with the organiser for one event. Arrgh..I'm just so irritated by him.
Time to take a break and play games!
Closure of DSC3202 Service Operations Mgmt C2 class on Tues 3-6pm in Semester 2 AY2010/11
From a module that has no exam to one with finals and accepting that I'll have 2 papers back to back after the changes. And after spending 6 hours in class, the class is closed and I'm forced to drop the module.
"We regret to inform you that the DSC3203 C2 class on Tuesdays 3-6pm will be closed due to low enrollment. We have examined various issues at length but due to university and school policies, we would have to merge the 2 (ie, C1 and C2) classes. We will automatically shift C2 students into the C1 class on Tuesdays 9-12pm if possible.
For those that have timing/module clashes with the C1 class, we will drop DSC3203 from your timetable."
So disappointing! So many mistakes! Failure in Service Operations! No wonder it's so difficult to complete a double major on time.
December Holiday
This holiday was quite well spent. I really enjoyed myself.

Went to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao at Holland Village for steamboat buffer treat by our profs. Yummy! Too bad I forgotten to take any photos.

Daddy and Mummy came back with me to Sg this time. Brought them around to a few places. Rainy weather didn't help at all.

Meeting with John to finalise the details for the Boys' Town Orientation. Had a cook together with Su, Kelly, and MJ before the meeting. Ended the day with delicious nasi lemak from Boon Lay.26th December 2010 - Christmas Party
Attended OOS Christmas Party. Didn't really eat much. Played some board games and Bobo said I'm the overall champion! Haha..conquered Australia and Asia in the last round.

A gathering for all SYC participants and to formally introduce the STEP Chapter: Singapore upcoming activities.
31st December 2010 - New Year's Eve
Spent time with Bobo. Didn't go anywhere for countdown. Just watch from TV. In fact, I think it's better than going there.

The installation consists of the Artist's 9 favourite optimistic visionaries (Heroes) who have used their mental state to effect positive outcomes in their physical world. Inspired by songs such as "Rainbow Connection" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow", these Heroes incubate dreams and will "deposit positivity" to the public as they draw near to the Heroes. Famous quotes written at base of each Heroes will enable the public to guess who they are. |

Handling Criticisms
How do you handle criticisms when they are displayed before you with different intensities, ranging from mild assertions to stinging words thrown straight in your face?
Stop Being Defensive and Start Examining Yourself
In all cases, criticism usually arises out of something that you did or didn’t do. The most difficult task is to separate the facts from the emotions. The next step is to objectively look at the results and ask how you played a part of it. For example, if you were criticised for making bad decisions that caused poor results, examine how you made it happened. This is because if you were to instantly be defensive, self evaluation will not occur at all.
A cognitive psychological tool called Johari window also states that everyone has a blind spot. This represents information that a person is not aware about themselves but others are aware of it. Therefore, it is imperative to listen what the criticism is and find out whether there is any truth in that statement.
Change Yourself
Change does not usually happen at a cognitive level but usually happens at an emotional level. For example, even if you are overweight and know that you have to lose weight, you might not be doing anything significant about it. This is the cognitive level. However, when things happen at an emotional level, the results might be longer lasting.
So, ask yourself the tough question what do you need to change? By not making a decision is also making a decision not to do anything. Change only comes in when you demonstrate the resolve and absolute desire to make it happen (and of course, take MASSIVE ACTION on it).
It is also good to thing about the good outcomes from the positive change in your life. Know that everything comes with a cost, even with change. So, discipline and intense resolution is required to make the change.
Understand that Criticism is inevitable
Criticism; whether it is given with true intentions or destructive in nature, are always inevitable.
Here are some questions to determine if criticism is helpful:
- Who said it? Sometimes harsh words from a wise man are better than the loving kisses of fools.
- What was the spirit behind it? Is it to help or tear me down?\
- What is the truth? I need to determine if what was true and how I should address it.
Let go and move on
What happens when you feel that after much self examination, there is really nothing wrong with yourself? There are people who will constantly grew angry and frustrated because of what other people said to them. They are not able to let go and move on in their lives.
Secure people can see that they are fallible and know what their weaknesses are. The good thing is that they make a conscious decision not to get bonded by the negativity and move ahead fresh. If you keep harping about the past, you will never be able to take on the new possibilities in your life.
John Maxwell in an article shares that “while we are growing up, a lot of us spend a good deal of time worrying about what the world thinks of us. By the time we reach 60, we realize the world wasn’t paying much attention.”
Conclusion:
Some of the best people that entered into your life were your critics, not friends. Treat criticisms with a certain respect, learn from it and then move on in your life
